I have shoe boxes full of old hockey cards that I had collected when I was a kid. Most of them are kind of beat-up because we used to play games with the cards (throwing the cards to see who could get closest to the wall without touching, etc.), wrap an elastic band around them and carry them in our pockets, etc. Yes, we even attached them to our bikes so they would make “motorcycle” sounds in the spokes… Maybe I’m regretting all that now! No, not really, but the value that some of these cards have is incredible theses days — and that’s for single cards.
But one family in Regina has really hit the jackpot — they found an unopened case of hockey cards from the 1979-80 season. Not a box — a case! That’s more than 10,000 cards. The big thing about that particular year is that the series from that season includes Wayne Gretzky’s rookie card.
If you do the math, there could be 25 to 30 Wayne Gretzky rookie cards in that case. Gretzky rookie cards in good condition sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In 2020 a Gretzky rookie card sold for over a million. Then in 2021 a Gretzky rookie card sold for a record $3.75-million! Unopened boxes (where no one knows what’s inside) have been selling for over $200,000.
I think I’m going to go look in the storage under the stairs at my house and see what type of treasure I can find. I’m not expecting much…
