I recently waited so long on hold before talking to a human with customer service with my cell phone provider that it felt like I had aged a few decades while I was waiting.

Can you even really call it “service” if you have to wait that long?

Oh, and don’t get me started on the music… Even the writers and performers (or their mothers) of that on-hold music wouldn’t want to listen to that same thing on a loop for that long!

I don’t think having a better telephone customer service experience is that difficult to provide.
So, here’s a tip/reminder, if you run a small business or a giant multinational conglomerate; give your customer service telephone number a call once in a while just to see what the experience is like. If the music is annoying, or you measure the time waiting with a calendar instead of a stopwatch — fix it!
