DUNCAN — It was a night of two teams matching each other step for step all night long in a Clippers versus Capitals BCHL matchup.
Cowichan Valley won 4-3 in a back and forth game.
Nanaimo scored first when Elliot Perreault picked up his team leading 13th goal of the season on a first period power play.
The Capitals countered with tallies from Gavin Nemis and Adam Lang.
Nemis had the Teddy Bear Toss goal at the Cowichan Valley Community Centre and it was disputed but stood up after a video review.
Landon Pappas tied the game for the Clippers in the second period by scoring his first BCHL goal.
Then Hayden Fechner put Nanaimo in front with a power play goal halfway through the middle frame.
Just 41 seconds later Jack McAra tied the game on a deflection and AP Hunter Yanick notched the game winner at the 14:15 mark of the period.
Nanaimo pressed in the third but were stymied by first star Rhett Stoesser of the Capitals.
He stopped all the shots he faced in the final period including highlight reel stops on Sam Boisvert, Jordan Geike and Hayden Fechner.
Overall Nanaimo outshot Cowichan Valley 36-34 with the Clippers going 2/4 on the man advantage and 4/4 killing penalties.
In the season series Nanaimo is 3-2-1 but after winning the first three head to head matchups they have dropped the last three.
They have more game against each other on Dec. 16 at the Cowichan Valley Community Centre.
Coming out of the weekend the Capitals lead the Clippers by 11 points for first place in the Coastal West Division.
Nanaimo’s next game is their Teddy Bear Toss night on Friday, Dec. 12 against Surrey.
