NANAIMO — An 18-year-old is dead following a crash along Hwy. 1, south of the city.
Emergency first responders were called to the highway, near the Morden Rd. intersection, after a black Audi S3 lost control, crashed and caught fire around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin told NanaimoNewsNOW the incident killed an 18-year-old man, and injured the 19-year-old driver, with potentially more than one vehicle involved.
“We believe a second vehicle, a second dark coloured car, was driving very closely, possibly a black Honda Civic. We have not yet identified that car or the driver. It’s very important that witnesses help us identify that driver and dash camera video would also be very important.”
The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
McLaughlin said it is very early in their investigation and would not comment on any contributing factors.
“We are not going to confirm at this point whether there is one factor or another. We can definitely say that criminality has not been ruled out. That means we need to leave everything on the table. Get to the bottom of exactly what happened, speak to the other driver who may have been involved.”
Police note the second vehicle did not stop following the crash.
Traffic was closed in the northbound lanes of Hwy. 1 for nearly 12 hours following the collision, with vehicles re-routed along a side-street.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol via their Duncan office at (250) 746 2751, quoting file number (7001) 2025-2168.
