NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners women’s soccer team has won back to back provincial championships.
VIU beat Douglas College 2-0 in the PACWEST title game in Squamish on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Mariners coach Bobbi Taylor was thrilled with the win but is also setting her sights on the CCAA national tournament.
“I feel splendid but not completely fulfilled. We have a super deep team that has the potential to go that much farther at nationals and business isn’t taken care of.”
Conference Player of the Year Jada Kamerman was instrumental in the win with two first half goals in the gold medal game.
Kamerman was selected the player of the game and also named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Other tournament awards went to Kaiden Thorpe who was chosen as the top goalkeeper and Mary Nicholls was picked as the top defender.
Taylor said the win was a full team effort throughout the entire lineup.
“They were mentally well prepared, they did a lot of work on different scenarios they could come up against. It was indicative of how they played. I’m super proud of them.”
The Mariners had a stellar season with a 10-1-1 record en route to the provincial championship.
They’ll move on to Red Deer for the nationals from Nov. 5-8 looking to improve on a fourth place finish from last year’s tournament.
“We’re not happy just to be there,” Taylor said. “We’re on a mission to win a gold medal. We want to play the very best that we can and take it one game at a time.”
