NANAIMO — A young mastiff dog is now under the care of the Nanaimo and District SPCA after being rescued from a local property.
The SPCA reports an animal protection officer seized the dog from a property in the city after it was found to be living in deplorable conditions.
“This poor emaciated dog was found on a property without any visible food or water,” Eileen Drever, BC SPCA spokesperson, said in a statement. “Jace was barely able to walk, limping and shivering in the cold. He was suffering from fur loss and was burdened by a heavy chain.”
Drever added the only shelter visible for Jace was a “dilapidated doghouse” that was wet on the inside and lacked any sort of bedding.
Jace showed clear signs of neglect, including lacking substantial muscle mass. (submitted photo/BC SPCA)Jace was rescued during the recent cold snap, with the protection officer concerned he may not make it through the night without immediate care.
Upon treatment at a nearby animal hospital, Jace was found to be suffering from muscle loss, had limited vision and a thin, irritated coat.
There were visible pressure sores on his pelvis, as well as crusty ear tips, according to the SPCA.
Drever added when Jace was taken into care, he was very trusting but disoriented due to his limited vision.
Since his change in surroundings, Jace is gaining weight and his prospects continue to improve.
“He has a very handsome ‘sit’ that comes along with big puppy dog eyes,” Drever said. “It’s impossible to not give him a treat.”
Jace will be ready for adoption once he fully recovers, which will include a full dental exam under general anesthesia while he is neutered.
