NANAIMO — Dubbed a celebration of light, art and community, the City of Nanaimo is staging a month-long winter arts festival at Maffeo Sutton Park.
Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150 & Beyond includes temporary light-based art installations in the downtown Nanaimo park beginning with a community celebration on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“To mark that significant date, the Luminous Paths opening event will feature food trucks, children’s crafts, interactive community booths, live music, dance and light performances. Illuminated art installations will be on display in identified public spaces, encouraging visitors to explore the park and community spaces,” a City of Nanaimo news release stated.
Jan. 22, 1875, marked the inaugural City Council meeting in Nanaimo, shortly after the community officially became an incorporated municipality about a month earlier.
The art installations will remain in place nightly (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.) until Feb. 17 (Family Day) when a closing event is scheduled.
