NANAIMO — Forecasted strong winds are leading BC Ferries to proactively cancel some weekend crossings between the Island and Lower Mainland.
A wind warning remains in effect for most of eastern Vancouver Island, with BC Ferries scrapping the 6:15 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. sailings from Departure Bay on Saturday, Dec. 14, along with the corresponding crossings from Horseshow Bay at the same time.
Customers with reservations on those trips will receive a notice from BC Ferries customer service to either re-book on a different sailing or offer a refund.
Environment Canada is forecasting southeast wind speeds upwards of 70 kilometres per hour for the Nanaimo region on Saturday morning, gusting to upwards of 100 kilometres per hour.
The storm is the result of a strong Pacific storm moving its way in beginning Friday, Dec. 13 and is projected to bring considerable wind and rain.
Further ferry cancellations could result from the storm with travellers advised to check the BC Ferries website prior to heading out.
