NANAIMO — A garbage truck which crashed on its side caused some minor traffic delays in north Nanaimo on Monday.
Emergency crews were called to Bradbury Rd. near Rutherford Rd. shortly before noon on Monday, July 22, after a city garbage truck rolled on its side.
A witness on scene Kiersten Zanchetta, said it appears the truck may have been coming down Rutherford Hill towards Hammond Bay Rd. when it turned onto Bradbury Rd. and rolled on its side.
“It looked like he hit the sidewalk or something happened and the whole truck just fell right over, and it was just the loudest, biggest boom you ever heard, BANG. I couldn’t believe it even happened, I thought he hit the lampost or something, but no he missed the lampost.”
Zanchetta who initially called 911, said another civilian helped the driver get into a less uncomfortable position prior to Nanaimo Fire rescue arriving on scene.
“A fellow, he used to be a firefighter, had an axe in his vehicle went and axed out the window and got his legs free. We waited for paramedics to show up, paramedics showed up and pulled him out.”
(Alex Rawnsley/NanaimoNewsNOW)The truck was full of recycling and organic waste material, and the driver and lone occupant was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with unknown injuries.
A heavy-duty tow truck had to be called in to recover the garbage truck, with traffic reduced to a single alternating lane along Rutherford at the time.
It’s not known at this time what impact this incident could have on City collection services.
