NANAIMO — Managing hazardous trees on a section of a popular hiking trail resulted in a temporary closure of the primary route leading up Mt. Benson.
An extended section of trail beyond the first viewpoint at Benson View Regional Trail will be closed on April, 3, noted the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN).
“This work will include converting two dead cedar trees into habitat snags and laying flat dead and unstable trees near the trail,” noted an RDN closure bulletin.

Signage at Mount Benson Regional Park clearly displays the temporary closure to manage hazardous trees at the popular recreation area just west of Nanaimo city limits.
Benson View Regional Trail consistently sees hundreds of hikers venturing up the mountain daily during the peak spring and summer seasons.
