NANAIMO — A store security guard was left shaken but otherwise uninjured following a tense situation in south Nanaimo.
Officers responded around 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 28 at University Village on Fifth St. after a security guard at Shoppers Drug Mart told a man to leave the store and he became violent.
Cst. Gary O’Brien said the security guard recognized the man as a repeat shoplifter and an altercation ensued.
“We found three individuals actively engaged and attempting to assault the security guard. Our members arrested all three and found one with a knife.”
Video of the incident was captured by a witness. It contains foul language, discretion is advised.
All three men were arrested and are well-known to police. O’Brien said they’re prolific offenders with a history of violence and carrying weapons.
The three are facing charges of assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
“An individual can be arrested for assault without actually having contact with somebody. If their behaviour or they’re making threatening gestures, that’s enough to qualify for assault,” O’Brien said.
The trio were later released on a promise to appear in court on July 6.
