NANAIMO — The highlight of National Non-Smoking Week encourages everyone to put down their cigarette, joint or vape for 24 hours.
“It could be the start of something wonderful,” Dr. Derek Poteryko, medical director of community health within Island Health, said in a letter.
“Try a day, what do you have to lose? You have everything to gain. Your body, your wallet, your family and friends and even your planet will thank you.”
Dr. Poteryko admitted quitting smoking is a significant challenge and many of his patients liken it to losing a best friend.
“What best friend would take your hard-earned money and shorten your life? This best friend turns out to be your worst enemy.”
He said evidence provided by the BC CDC showing COVID-19 infections are more severe in those who smoke or vape should be a wakeup call for everyone who smokes.
Anyone wishing to stop smoking can always access Quit Now, the free 24-hour smokers helpline.
