NANAIMO – A missing Nanaimo couple and their dog have been found after a large search through vast wilderness.
Nanaimo RCMP confirmed on Saturday, Nov. 14, Cody Martin, Tamara Sandulak and their dog Rex were located safe approximately 16 kilometres from the crew staging area.
The three were found Saturday morning at Moriarty Lake. The two and their dog were cold and hungry but otherwise fine.
“This is the outcome everyone was hoping and praying for. We would like to acknowledge all of the dedicated volunteers and especially each and every Search an Rescue volunteer, who provided expertise and commitment to this arduous search effort,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said.
The couple were stranded when their truck broke down at the lake on Remembrance Day. They spent Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night in the truck for warmth.
On Saturday morning, the three left the truck to hike and find a cell signal where they alerted friends and family. Nanaimo Search and Rescue located them a short time later.
An RCMP helicopter airlifted them to the staging area to be reunited with family and be examined by paramedics.
