NANAIMO – Thousands of people are without power in the Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach and Parksville areas.
BC Hydro lists several outages in the region starting around 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct.13 in Oceanside, with more recent ones in the mid-afternoon in Nanaimo.
The outages affect more than 10,000 people in the mid-Island from Qualicum to Ladysmith.
Crews are currently assigned to the significant outages, which are blamed on the wind storms buffeting the area.
The region is under a wind warning which extends down most of the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Winds are expected to top out between 50 to 70 kilometres per hour, gusting to 90 kilometres per hour by the water.
Environment Canada said winds are expected to diminish Tuesday evening.
