NANAIMO – Federal officials don’t believe any environmental impacts will result from the untimely demise of a float home just off the east shore of Valdes Island.
The 65 foot long float home sank due to operator error while being towed near the gulf island east of Ladysmith, according to a joint statement to NanaimoNewsNOW.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said no fuel was on board at the time and while the float home is in the vicinity of a Rockfish Conservation Area, it is not within the area itself.
“It is unlikely there will be any long term effects on rockfish or other marine life from the float home.”
Images taken by area residents showed the dilapidated float home had been broken apart into hundreds of pieces in the days following the Sept. 20 mishap.
Cleanup of the wooden structure was expected to be completed this weekend.
Transport Canada paid the $20,000 bill to remove the destroyed float home.
