NANAIMO — A month-long public art exhibit is lighting up paths in the city’s most popular parks.
In partnership with the Snuneymuxw First Nation (SFN), the City is inviting residents down to Sway-a-Lana at Maffeo Sutton Park after the sun sets to check out the ‘Lighting a Path’ art exhibit.
Seven large-scale light projections will be positioned around the park, displaying artwork on the paths created by local SFN artists.
The projections were installed on Monday, Feb. 16, and will be in place until March 16th.
The ‘Lighting a Path’ art exhibit at Maffeo Sutton Park is best viewed at night.
According to a City news release, the displays are best viewed after dark, and it “continues the spirit of the Luminous Paths festival,” which is expected to return in full force next year.
Featured artists include the late Dr. William Good; the late W. Joel Good; Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun; kwasilwit, Chenoa Point; Noel Brown; Ryan Hughes; and yutustana:t, Gena Seward-Wilson.
The City said each art piece is intended to bring forward “themes of place, identity, memory, and the enduring relationship between people and land.”
A similar display of lights protecting artwork on city streets was featured along Commercial St. in December.
More information, including detailed descriptions of the artists and their work, can be found here on the City’s website.
