PARKVILLE — A relatively dry spring, coupled with hot, dry weather expected to come in July, is forcing increased water restrictions in Oceanside.
Beginning Friday, June 27, residents in the City of Parksville will be under stage three watering restrictions in a bid to conserve the water supply serving the municipality.
“Level 3 offers some flexibility for residents to decide where and how they cut back on water use and is intended to encourage residents to reduce water use where possible,” a statement from the City reads. “The most significant change to Level 3 with the revised water framework approved earlier this year is to sprinkler watering, which allows watering of lawns one day per week.”
The City notes their water restriction decision-making is done in partnership with the Arrowsmith Water Service, as well as the provincial government to ensure supply remains for fire safety and local fish habitats.
“The Arrowsmith reservoir is currently at full capacity. To prolong the release of water from the dam, a reduction in the flow release requires the City to implement Level 3 conservation measures.”
Under stage three restrictions, watering days for odd-numbered houses are Mondays, while even-numbered houses can water on Thursdays.
Pop-up spray or other sprinklers can be used between 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for a maximum of two hours.
Washing of vehicles, RVs, boats or exterior surfaces can also occur during these times.
Shrubs, flowers and trees can only be watered by a hand-held container or a hose with a shut-off nozzle.

The City of Nanaimo and a vast majority of the Regional District of Nanaimo is remaining under stage two watering restrictions.
