NANAIMO — An evening joyride for a self-described “influencer” in Lantzville has proved costly.
A yellow Nissan GT-R was seen by an unmarked B.C. Highway Patrol vehicle rapidly accelerating from the Hwy. 19 and Ware Rd. intersection at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, a move which caught the officer’s attention.
Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said the officer was quick to use his speed radar equipment, and clocked the vehicle going 150 kilometres per hour in the 90 zone.
“The Nissan GT-R driver, who identified himself as a YouTube influencer, never saw the unmarked police car, and he was surprised that his radar detector stayed silent. The driver did not realize that in the hands of a skilled police officer, a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it’s too late.”
The vehicle was pulled over a short time later by the officer.
McLaughlin noted the driver, and his passenger, remained polite with the officer as he was issued a ticket for $368 under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The driver’s vehicle was also towed and automatically impounded for seven days as a result of the incident.
McLaughlin said the officer was able to drive the pair to a nearby Tim Horton’s while they awaited a ride from the influencer’s mother.
