NANOOSE BAY — A Canadian telecom giant intends to install a tower in Nanoose Bay to bolster the area’s wireless services.
Rogers Communications proposes to install a 53-metre tall communications tower with antennas and a lighting rod at 1800 Serenity Pl. in Nanoose Bay.
In a statement to NanaimoNewsNOW, Rogers noted the proposal would improve wireless services in the northern area of Nanoose Bay, as well as Northwest Bay Rd. toward Parksville.
“When completed, the proposed site will provide improved service for Rogers, Fido and chatr customers, including access to 911 for all wireless users. Other service providers can apply to Rogers for consideration to collocate their equipment once tower is completed,” the statement read.
Rogers Communications is scheduled to hold a public engagement meeting at the Nanoose Bay Elementary School gym on Wednesday, Feb 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Rogers stated the consultation process follows the RDN’s tower siting procedures, as well as regulations set out by Innovation Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
The federal government (ISED) has exclusive jurisdiction over the placement of wireless telecommunications facilities in the country.

Meantime, an active application by TELUS proposes to construct a 189-metre cellular tower at the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre property to vastly improve wireless services to the vast Hammond Bay area.
A consultation process took place last fall.
TELUS intends to request a land use concurrence from Nanaimo City Council to enable the wireless upgrades to proceed.
