PARKSVILLE — The Coastal Fire Centre is reminding Island residents to stay vigilant despite cooler and wetter conditions after a wildfire was sparked over the weekend.
Located in the Mr. Arrowsmith region, the Lockwood Creek wildfire was approximately two hectares in size as the morning of Monday, Sept. 23, discovered Sunday evening at less than a hectare in size and currently classified as burning out-of-control.
Information officer Kimberly Kelly said the fire is located in a remote area.
“There are no threats to any values at this point in time, it is burning in slash. We have two initial attack crews, a response officer, a unit crew responding, as well as Mosaic is supporting us with a water tender and personnel.”

Kelly said the fire is suspected to be human-caused at this point, as there was no lightning activity in the recent forecast in the area.
“The fire danger rating is low as we have seen this cooler, wetter temperature, but this is a good reminder for people to be vigilant and aware that we can still, even with these cooler and wetter temperatures, we can still see wildfire starts.”
