NANAIMO — A local man is facing multiple charges, including criminal negligence causing death, after a crash on the Nanaimo Parkway last summer.
Sixty-year-old Michael Allison Rennie is the man RCMP allege was behind the wheel of a green Dodge Caravan on the night of July 19, 2023, at around 9:45 p.m. when it hit another vehicle driven by 24-year-old Reid Davidson, who later died of his injuries.
Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said a police investigation indicated Rennie’s actions while driving directly led to the fatal incident.
“Mr Rennie’s alleged to have been driving in the wrong direction, at which point his vehicle collided with Mr. Davidson’s and sadly took his life. Mr. Rennie was located in Nanaimo on warrants.”
Rennie, who’s of no fixed address, has remained in custody since his arrest.
He faces charges of criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stop after an accident.
Rennie is due to appear again in court on July 10.
His limited criminal record features a 30 day jail sentence after he was convicted of dangerous operation of a vehicle for an incident in 2005 in Nanaimo.
The death of Davidson triggered an outpouring of support from Nanaimo’s soccer community, of which Davidson was a prominent member.
Nanaimo United and Harbourside FC both held tributes to Davidson last summer.
