I don’t know what your place is like, but I have a bit of a forest around my house. I actually love it — for most of the year. The trees look awesome, they help give some privacy for my yard, and in the summer they provide some very welcome shade. There is a mix of evergreen trees (firs, etc.), a few arbutus trees and two different types of maple trees. But it’s those maple trees that cause all the problems at this time of year.
Anytime I’m out in the yard (most of the time raking leaves), people walking, and even driving by will stop to comment on how beautiful the maple tree in my front yard is at this time of year. And it is… But it’s huge and has sooooo many leaves. When people compliment me on the tree, I usually say thanks, and let them know that I have an extra rake if they want to help clean up. That’s usually when they continue on their way.🤷♂️
My yard has already been raked four times this year, and I probably have that many more raking jobs ahead of me. And that’s just the front yard! I have two big-leaf maple trees in the back yard that are still probably a few weeks away from being fully ready to drop their leaves. My city compost bin is full of leaves every week, I also have a compost bin in my backyard that I put leaves in that will eventually turn into soil that I use in the yard, and I haul a bunch back into the forest too. I’m like a squirrel hiding nuts for the winter, except I’m stashing leaves everywhere! So, when I’m not on the radio, you know where you’ll find me for the next little while… In the yard raking leaves.
