NANAIMO — The BC Independent Investigations Office (IIO) are looking into Nanaimo RCMP officers after an arrest in the downtown.
A release from the IIO said an investigation has begun following a Tuesday, March 29 arrest of a woman at Port Place Shopping Centre.
“Police attempted to apprehend a woman…to return her to a residential facility,” the release read. “It is reported that there was an interaction as the woman was taken into custody and she was transported to hospital.”
The IIO said Nanaimo RCMP officers were made aware of a serious injury sustained by the woman after the incident.
The office will look into the conduct of officers and determine the role, if any, police played in the injury.
BC IIO investigations are automatically triggered when a person may have been seriously injuried due to the “actions or inactions of a police officer, whether on or off duty” according to the IIO website.
