NANAIMO — A man failed to attend his first court appearance after new charges were laid for property crimes and resisting arrest.
The warrant against chronic property offender Jason Paul Klughart, 30, was issued by a judge on Tuesday March 22, which was scheduled to be the first court appearance for the accused.
Klughart is charged with fraud under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and resisting arrest in connection to alleged offences on Jan. 10 in Nanaimo.
He was sentenced to serve a further four and a half months behind bars last fall, with pre-sentence custody credit, after he pleaded guilty to theft charges and a probation breach for incidents last year in Nanaimo.
At the time of his sentencing, his lawyer Stephen Taylor stated Klughart will continue going back to jail “again and again” if he can’t address longstanding substance abuse issues.
“He doesn’t have much to show for his life at 30-years-old,” Taylor said. “I’m hoping his new awareness is sincere and that he might commit himself to a drug-free lifestyle,” Taylor told the court on Sept. 29.
Klughart has a lengthy criminal record, resulting multiple jail tenures throughout his adult life, primarily involving property crimes in Nanaimo and the Cowichan Valley.
