NANAIMO – A COVID-19 outbreak has been confirmed at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
Island Health confirmed late on Wednesday, Nov. 11 evidence shows the outbreak currently involves five staff members in one transitional care unit at the hospital.
The unit is closed to admissions and visitors.
“Island Health has implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in all acute and long-term care facilities,” a release said.
“Upon declaring the outbreak, Island Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning and contact tracing to protect the health of all staff, medical staff and patients.”
The emergency room at NRGH remains open. Island Health stressed the closure of the transitional unit due to the outbreak has not impacted other areas of the hospital.
This is the largest confirmed COVID-19 exposure event in Nanaimo.
Three exposure events were confirmed in the last week at Nanaimo schools.
