NANAIMO – The man who fled police at a high-speed and doesn’t remember the incident after mixing painkillers and alcohol will serve his sentence outside of jail.
Premi Sandhu was recently sentenced at provincial court in Nanaimo for dangerous driving and fleeing police for a March 30, 2017 incident.
Sandhu has no memory of driving away from a Nanaimo police officer at 100 kilometres per hour on Stewart Ave. and running several red lights.
Judge Ted Gouge said Sandhu is at a low-risk to reoffend but the seriousness of his crime warranted a six month conditional sentence.
Sandhu ends up with a criminal record which is served outside of jail under strict conditions.
Sandhu is not allowed to drive for one year.
He’d asked the court to waive the driving suspension to not interfere with his new business venture of concrete molding.
Sandhu told judge Gouge he accepted responsibility for his actions when he went out to a bar with friends.
He said it was his first time being out of the house after a medical condition kept him confined to a bed for one-and-a-half years.
His lawyer Bert King called the incident “five minutes of stupidity.”
